Internet and Big Business - How Can Change Benefit All Players

Professor Wesch's Simulation Video was thought-provoking and inspiring. The professor was right on target the web is us, we control the machine by providing content, links, pictures, sharing files, etc. However, the fact remains - in 1999, when I first came online, music was being purchased at Tower records (now defunct) on CDs because digital downloads were still only a concept. Then iTunes came along because Apple had the big bucks to launch that portal and thus MP3 downloads became a reality.

The web is changing everyday before our eyes, big business is now realizing that online is the next phase and they are coming with their big dollars and the rules are therefore changing rapidly. How is the small business going to survive online? What can we do on small budgets to compete with these bigger players?

Not so long ago, Google Adwords for some relevant keywords used to be charged from as little as 0.05-cents up to the sky would be the limit. Nowadays, those same keywords may still be relevant but in order to get shown for any of them, you have to start bidding at a minimum $10 and higher.

So my question, therefore, is how will the small guys stay in the game and still remain relevant? Will we have to concentrate only on niche areas? Do we focus on providing only content and hope that we can then sell that content to the bigger guys?

As I watched the professor’s video, these are some of the thoughts that entered my mind and I wanted to share this with my readers.

"We lost everything in that crash and fire. We were packed to live and do shows on that bus for a month. Most of us had every stitch of clothing we owned on there. We lost clothes, computers, recording equipment, cameras, IDs, phones, keys to cars and homes. We lost cash. We lost all our damn instruments and equipment to perform with. We were and are happy to walk away with our lives. But now we're home. Most of the band touring with The Coup has kids, rent that won't quit, bills, and holiday expenses coming. We need money, because like I said the band doesn't have the tools that they make a living with. Not only did we lose cash and material things on the bus, but we also were depending on this tour for money to make it through. It may take a year for us to see any money from the insurance company".

Hip-hop culture has proved to be a very effective means of conveying political ideas to young people. Its images and lyrics speak far more clearly to many of them than the language of mainstream politicians. And we may have seen only a hint of hip-hop's political promise.

A year ago the press was heralding the possibility that a young, progressive and hip-hop-influenced voting bloc would decide the 2004 presidential election. Now, with President Bush re-elected and vital statewide and Congressional elections upcoming, many on the left are wondering what happened to the "hip-hop voting movement."

"It hasn't disappeared in any way," says Adrienne Brown, co-founder of the youth-run, 20,000-strong League of Pissed Off Voters, which has utilized hip-hop culture as a voter-education and recruitment tool. "It's just gotten deeper with less media attention."

Hip-hop sensation KANYE WEST has been slammed by magazine editors after demanding he be paid to pose for photoshoots.

I wanted to wade in on this article with my comments as it relates solely from a business perspective.

I read recently that Kanye West is cocky ... but we need to stop for a moment and consider the business of rap/hip hop.

Why should everyone benefit from this tremendous industry except the immediate players? When a "Brand Name Designer" manufacturers a garment for 48-cents in South America and marks that up 1000% who complains?

Kanye West having just won a Grammy is a business entity. When he's placed on the cover of any magazine after winning this prestigious award, that publication will sell in record numbers. Would Esquire have approached him if he hadn't won a grammy? Be careful, "a no-name artist" may call your bluff! Who's winning from his new found fame? Why shouldn't he be paid or negotiate his share of that pot?

Or, should the hip hop artist only always settle and be content with just what he's given and shut up? Think about it - are we begging for a lodging? Or are we equal beings in this world where we are all living on borrowed time from the Master?

It said that Internet radio stations offer many advantages over their traditional predecessor, empowering individuals to choose their own listening criteria.
